I have heard about people adding salt to their freshwater stingray tanks. What I was wondering is what is the purpose of this? Does it help the stingrays immune system or something like that?

Another thing I was wondering is how much salt do you add? tbs of salt per gallons? What do you keep the salinaty at when you do this? What kind of salt do you use? Would saltwater salt made for saltwater aquariums be the best bet?

Thanks in advance for all the help and replies.

It is used to treat or as a preventative for infection to minor damages on the ray. It can be added up to 3lbs/100G, but I do 1.5lbs/100G if I needed to treat my tank.

Table salt, but non iodized. Cheap and just as effective as "aquarium salt"

If i remember correctly, mike once said you can use up to 5lb. 3lb is the regular dose for most people to cure the more than minor injuries.

I would stay away from table salt. it contains an ingredient to help the salt to flow out of your salt shaker. This substance although harmless can cloud your water. Use plain rock salt instead. With that said, salt isn't really needed for the true FW ray.
