If I were to purchase that piece that you can attach to your faucett so i can run a hose directly to my tank, can i put the water directly in, and then add the conditioner to my tank after the chlorinated water is in the tank??

Add dechlor prior to refilling.
Add enough dechlor to dose the entire water volume not just the water being replaced.
Determine whether or not your local water utility uses chloramines, dose according to manufactures directions to break the bond and detoxify resulting NH3(ammonia)...
If you do have chloramines, make sure your dechlor is capable of handling it, I recommend 'Prime'.

diffrent strokes for diffrent folks. after a water change, i add water and the conditioner. but other people may do what was described above.i think it may be a matter of personal prference.

If you dose the full volume of the tank, you will be fine refilling the tank and then adding conditioner. Does your water source use chlorine or chloramines though? Have you checked with your water department? Mine only uses chlorine, and only when large volumes of people are coming into town from out of town (small college town).

i pit the dechlor in to a cup of tank water. Then when i start adding in the water i start dumping the cup in little at a time. This is how i do it though. Also you MOST turn off all filters and do not turn them on till after you have put the dechlor in . It would not hurt to swish the water around before you turn the filters on. I also add for the whole tank but every few cleanings i will only add what im taking out..

I usually add water conditioner as I'm filling up my tank with new water.

I've seen this discussion debated (and I've partaken) so many times on many a forum...

There are proponents of before/after, total volume/adjusted volume and even whether or not conditioner is really needed in most cases where only chlorine is used.
There are some studies showing that the average chlorine dosage is so minimal as to be of little/no impact if water changes are less than a certain percantage, 25-50% +/- (?)(don't recall numbers).

But disregard all of the debate/discussion...

Just think this way, "Better safe than sorry."
Why take a chance that for five or more minutes (5+min) chlorine/chloramine may be killing beneficial bacteria colonies/burning your prized fish's delicate gill membranes while you refill...
What if your distracted away with just enough time to turn off the water?

Dechlor added before hand reacts almost instaneously to detoxify chlorine/chloramine, virtually no chance of anything harmful happening thuswise.

I use prime and dose to the entire tanks volume i like to add it mid stream while refilling so it mixes well.

the best advice is to follow your brands directions if you have clorine only half dose ect ...

Not worth thnking about. Just put the conditioner in as you are doing the water change and you will be fine. It's not easy to overdose Stress Coat so it's no big deal if you treat the entire volume of the tank but why waste product and $$?

I add it after I have completed the water change.
