Hi, I'm setting up an 85 gal african tank and want to do undergravel jets... but I heard that africans should have little or no current, will they be happy with a constant current?

My malawis loved my power heads, but most tangs I wouldn't add them to. My tropheus like them though.

Agreed........, I've got a Malawi tank with a few tangs tank (125 gal) with a seio 620 folwing upward on one end, as well as my 3 canisters (2 xp 3's & a eheim 2028) both xp 3's are flowing at a downward 45 degree angle and my eheim is agitating the surface as well as a bubble wand on on end of my 6' tank.................In my opinion the malawis and tropheous love swimming against the current........my fronts maybe not so much but they just chill out anyway and float around in the current............go for it!!!

I was going to use ugj for my mbuna tank but I heard so many people say with all the digging your tank will look like an accident at the plumbing factory most of the time,I decided not to bother.

IMHO I would not use undergravel jets. As with most cichlids, they will dig and destroy the biological bed situated underneath the UGF plate.

there is no ugf plate when you are using ugj

Would have to agrre that it would not be advisable to use undergravel filters with mbuna, especially. They are diggers and the system will not work properly. The fish love a bit of current, especially when airated.:naughty: :woot: :clap :headbang2

i agree and support all the non undergravel powerhead beleivers tanganyika is not a river guys!

well, the tank is completely set up and they love it (as far as I can tell), so far I highly recommend UGJ; keep alot of small debris off the ground and in the sponges, works very well.
