I am just curious if it is normal for Black Belt's to hide a lot. Mine has been staying hid about 80 - 90% of the time lately. He hasn't been eating all that much either. I have had him for around two months now, he is an F1 from Jeff Rapps. Up until recently he has been eating like a pig and has more than doubled in size since I first bought him. He is definitely the largest fish in the tank (besides the pleco).

His fins and scales are in perfect condition. He does have a small spot right above his mouth, I am guessing from liplocking with another cichlid. Other than that he looks excellent. He does still come out occasionally and chase the red terror and the Amphilophus Hogaboomurus around just to give them a quick reminder that he is boss.

This is my first time keeping black belts so I was just wondering if this is somewhat normal behavior.

Thanks.

Thanks for the information. Hopefully it is just a phase he / she is going through.

Here is a picture of it coming out of it's hiding spot.

I can't believe how fast this fish is growing!

*Sorry about the dirty glass.

Thanks, the more I watch the more it seems like he/she just insists on defending his territory at all times. He doesn't like anyone getting anywhere near it. In the past few minutes I have watched him get into heated discussions with a red terror, a neet, a Amphilophus Hogaboomurus, and an Amphilophus Lyonsi. None have actually come to blows though.

My black belt is relatively easy going, by far the nicest looking fish in tank.. and gets bullied by my red devil, who i equally like... Gonna have to get rid of one of them.. sucks

Thanks for all of the replies. Hopefully he snaps out of his funk soon.
