so two days ago I was helping a buddy of mine move and he didnt have enough room in his new place to set up all of his tanks. He asked me to take his female Jag and female dovii both about 7 inches till he could take em to the LFS. I moved some stock around and put em bout in my 125 with my male jag who is about 10 or 11in. Right away the jags were hanging out on one side and the wolf on the other. so i looked in at them a few minutes ago and see eggs all over the flower pot!!

So my question is since I have never dealt with eggs before how can i tell if these eggs are good and will the male kill the female later down the road? I dont have a divider and havent seen any agression so far. any tips or help would b greatly appreciated!!

Congratulations on your first spawn. I would remove the Dovii if you can, also just let the Jags do what they have got to do. Tan coloured eggs are fertile and white eggs are infertile, you might be lucky and they might do well on their first spawn together but normally it takes them a few times and pratice. Your female should start moving the fertile eggs into like a cave or hole and leave the infertile ones there. When they hatch and are free swimming you might find your male might start eating them, I wouldnt worry becasue as i said it can take them a few spawns to get it right. Jags are prolific breeders anyway.

Good Luck.

Thanks Darren.

its not the females first time around so atleast she knows what shes doing lol but first time with my male. This morning i looked at the eggs and only saw about 3-5 white eggs so i think theyre all fertilized. theres probably about 350 eggs so i wont mind if male eats some of em cuz 350 fry would be crazy lol

fishman09: What makes you say the Male wont eat them?

As i know a few Male Jags where when the Fry are free swimming the Male has eaten them.

Thanks Darren.

cauase ive never heard of parachromis eating fry unless are breeding again with fry in the tanl or eat the eggs before they hatch and thats not male specific. my doviis didnt eat any fry. i was more saying to not expect the male to as thats not normal parenting behavior. if they are good parents they wont eat any
