question about breeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tanganyikan Shelldwellers are on my "to-breed" list. I'll be using a 20long for that. I can also think of the following, some probably more suited than others, of course.

Convicts
German Blue Rams
Bolivian Rams
Shelldwellers (as mentioned)
Corydoras Catfish
Various Barbs and Tetra species
Bettas
Gouramis (not Giant Gouramis, of course)
Bristlenose Plecos (and other Plecos, I'm sure)
And you MIGHT MIGHT be able to get away with Angels in a 20l. I'm kind of unsure about that.
Any of the Apistrogramma spp. cichlids
Any of the various species commonly called "Kribensis" (P. Pulcher probably being the most well know example)
You can always have a massive breeding colony of Shrimps

Thats about all I can think of off the top of my head. Again, some would be better suited than others.

I doubt a mature angel will spawn in 12" of water.

You could also do this:

A pair of fish( Apistos, Rams, Cons, Shelldweller, Bettas etc) and have a pair of Bristlenoses. These are bottom dwleeing fish thus will; not really distract the other fish. It will actuallty help them bond by acting as a 'dither'.

But a Bristlenose (or any bottom dweller) with something that spawns on the substrate, or is always close to the bottom of the tank (ie, Shelldwellers) don't fare well. Bettas and BN would be nice, because Bettas take up the upper half, BN the lower half. But Shelldwellers take up residence in shells obviously on the bottom of the tank. BNs also occupy the bottom of the tank, and from what I've seen, the BNs and SHellies will usually be fighitng for the same bit of bottom-retail.

And for things that spawn on the substrate, like Rams mostly do, in many cases the BN will eat the eggs, and a small fish like a Ram has a harder time getting a Bristnose to stay away, than say, an Oscar would.
