i want to build a 60gal tank and cant find any where that sells acrylic near by. can i use the thick plexiglass that lowe's sells and use the same cement used to do acrylic tanks.?

Yes. Plexiglass is a trade name if I can remember. Get some scrap first and test. You should be fine.

will it bow any....i cut tops for my two ten gallons out of 1/4" and they bowed

Take the tops off, get a heat gun and gently heat the acrylic. Wear gloves so you can coax it back into shape.

As far as your 60 gal build, we need folks here who have built acrylic tanks (any one on MFK?) to tell you about the bowing. 60 gal isnt that big so I assume it should'nt bow that much, especially if you cross brace at the top.

See if there's anything in the archives

Take a close look at how comercial acryllic tanks are braced. They are always prone to bowing...hence the extencive top bracing on the tanks.

there are 2 kinds of acrylic. the stuff at HD/lowes is generally extruded - has worse clarity, and less strength than the cell cast acrylic used in commercial aquariums. That and HD seems to charge a disgusting amount for their plexiglas around here anyway.

its a piece i had left from making my reptile tank tops got it from lowes.
