I would like to get a chain moray eel (Echidna catenata), but obviously not get a tank that is too small for it. The problem is I keep on getting different supposed lengths even when all the sites I've looked at use the same scientific name. This is rather confusing

These sites say they grow around 2' feet:

But these sites say they grow around 5'4" feet!

(165cm=5'4") http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/speciesSummary.php?ID=2609

They all use the same scientific name.... Can someone please tell me what I'm supposed to believe? All the sites seem to be pretty reliable..

Honestly the size difference may be due to male or female, also age of the ray they do get a nice size so I would plan for it to get 5 feet 4 inches and build your setup around that to play it safe.

ive never seen one grow over about 22 inches. and the oldest ive ever seen was about 5 years, so i'd think its reliable. but like mr. reef24 said, it never hurts to play it safe.

Okay I guess i won't get one then....

Could you recommend another moray eel (other than snowflake) that will do good in a 55 gallon tank by itself?

Gymnothorax tile is pretty small and will be ok in that size of tank, as will something like Echidna rhodochilus
