Hey I was wondering if clown loaches are really sensitive to lighting, I am planning on upgrading my tank and I want to start being able to grow some plants in there with the clown loaches, just something to make it look natural, but I was reading somewhere that loaches do not like very intense lighting. So is there a threshold at which I can have loaches and still keep plants? Has anybody noticed that their loaches do not come out when there lights are on or do they just not care?

Don't worry about it, just have plenty of hiding spots (bamboo or PVC pipes are popular), good current and a night period (IE: don't leave the lights on 24-7). Go >90 Gallon (or way more. Theoretically start at 100Gal and expect to go 120 or 150 after 5-years) and at least 5 loaches as they are highly social, active and get big (8-13"), though it takes a while. Keep them entertained with current and treats (snails, cucumber, in-shell unsalted peanuts, crab/lobster arms, garbanzo beans, dead frogs etc...) or they will get bored and may start shredding the plants. Huntington's in California, no? Little beach crabs, sand-crabs, little clams, goose-barnacles, snails, kelp, wee-beasties etc... (make sure they're clean) will be popular, nutritious and fun.
Plus, plants cast shadows on the bottom, and the loaches live on the bottom.... in the shadows. Perfect.

Hey thanks, I have about 7 loaches(2"-3") all oddballs but 1 i believe, and I do have plenty of hiding spots at the moment but I do need to redesign my powerheads so there is plenty of current and I am going to change out most of the rocks for some driftwood and plants, so they will feel more at home when the tank is remodeled.
