I am connecting an fx5 to a 180. The bulkhead for the intake is 6 inches from the bottom. I know canisters are meant to work with a syphon. After I connect to the bulkhead do I need to make the plumbing go up to the top of the tank and u turn before going to the filter? That way it still uses a syphon. Could I just go straight to the filter or would the pressure on the filter be too much? The output for the filter is a bulkhead 6 inches from the top if that makes a difference. Thanks.

I have my fx5 connected up to my durso pipe in my wier and its fine. I ripped out my sump as i was sick of it, i just connected the fx5 up to the existing pipework. Not sure if thats the answer you wanted?

I have a 125 with drilled bulkheads about 8" centered from the top of the glass. I ran 1.25 pvc under the tank and hooked up 2 eheim 2028's and a fluval 404. they return back into a 1.25 pipe then back through another bulkhead.

When the filters are running there is no problem. When the power shuts off all three seep water. 6 months ago I replaced the gaskets on the ehiems (1st time in 7 years) and the leaking during power outages has stopped with them.

If I had to guess you may end up with a situation like I described above.

My fx5 is fine when the powers out no leaks or anything?

I am going through the same thought process. It would look real clean like that intake bulkhead low and output high. But I worry about if a bulkhead starts to leak down low. Or if the fx5 leaks it could drain most of the tank. I'm leaning to the bulkheads on the to and just having to deal with looking at the intake pipe.

I had my FX5s hard plumbed into my 300. It worked very well. There's no need to run the piped back up. You'll be fine just plumbing it up.
