question about convicts and plants

i have a 29 gallon planted with amazon sword and vals... with about 5 baby convicts ive had since eggs... they are about 1" right now

i eventually want to pick the best male and keep him alone in the 29, but i dont want him to rip up my plants

now my question is, if he grows from a baby with the plants will he still rip them up as an adult? or will he recognize that they have been in there since he was a baby and leave them alone???

he might leave the plants alone as long as there is not a female and they are not breeding, but with cichlids it is anyone's guess. I had an oscar in a planted 55 and he didnt ruin the look of the tank
