This is a fairly simple question that has me scratching my head. I get a bit of green algae on the rocks in my tank from time to time. Its nothing major, but after a few weeks i usually just turn the rocks upside down, exposing the side that is free of algae, and depriving the side full of algae of light so that the algae dies.

I began to think today... maybe this is a bad move. Do you think that it is best to leave the algae alone or to remove the rock and clean it rather than just turning it over? I mean, having anything die in your tank, even algae, can't be a good thing, right?

Any response is appreciated. :)

It's not a bad idea but a few points.

If it's not that bad wrap the tank in towels for a few days will kill it(and also other plants, you did not mention that it your op).

When algae dies off oxygen is reduced so you may need to add more air during the period.

Hope it goes well.
