i bought a piece of driftwood at my lfs the other day and they told me to soak it in water, i just used regular tap water not thinking that maybe the wood would soak up some of the chlorine in the water....... is this something that i should worry about? should i i try to soak the water in dechlorinated water? thanks in advance

Should be ok if it's just regular tap water. If you're trying to remove the tanin I would soak it in HOT tap water for one week and change out the water every few hours. Some even recommend boiling in a pot for a few hours to speed up the process. To be on the safe side I would soak in a bath of dechlorinator water one time right before it goes into the tank.

If you can...boil it, because it releases a lot of tannin and helps the log to absorb more water-faster. If not, you can pour boiling water on it and let it sit. I've always used tap water and never had any negative consequences.

if you are really concerned you might want to soak it in old tank water, this way you can begin to introduce the pre-established tank bacteria to it.
