I was just doing maintanence removing duckweed from the tank (Hopefully permanently) and I felt a slimy substance touch my skin and 1 of my dwarf frogs out of nowhere freaked out and jumped about 2 inches from my mouth which was wide open. So the close encounter made me think - what would happen say if I were to swallow a live 2" african dwarf frog and what are the possible consequences from this exposure? And how can I tell the difference between african dwarf/clawed frogs? I have 2, the WAY smaller 1 has no front claws. But his backfeet have claws. And the 1 I almost swallowed had claws in the front and back. And is much bigger. Which is which?

Why are you thinking so much?
It probably wont taste too good unless you cook it. Ive cooked a few frogs and they are delicious. The small claws might give you a sore throat though

african dwarfs have 4 webbed feet, clawed only have their hind feet webbed. Also, they shouldnt grow past 2.5" while the clawed grows to 5" or so

I would think that it probably would hurt going down but who knows maybe you're body could digest the claws so they weren't sharp when they come out the other end if you know what I mean

I think if you had swallowed it you would either throw it back up, or you would digest it and might end up with salmonella or some other health problem.

I don't think he'd get salmonella unless the frog already carries it.He could be allergic to something on or within the frog and that could do him in.

So if something goes in your mouth you automatically swallow it or what?

No. Not always. It depends how far in. If it goes deep enough I can't spit back out. And I might not have time to use hands. Otherwise yeah id just spit back out. Most people instinctively swallow when something goes deep in their mouth > and touches the top back of their throat < you cannot touch the area with your tongue. It is way farther back.

Dont have a gag reflex Mr. biggs? Lol most of the population has a gag reflex and instinctively gags and tries to throw up things that were not intentionally swallowed. As said, raw amphibian might make you sick but wont kill you. I have not found anything online that suggests either species produces any sort of toxins. If anybody knows different please post a link, I am always interested in chemical/toxin defences among the species in the hobby

Here in Asia, they eat things far worse than a live frog that you yourself have taken care of. You will be okay if it happens. The movement in your stomach will be a lot faster than when a clawed frog can react and scratch your esophagus. The HCl in your gut will most likely bring it to its death quick enough. I see your concern is valid as weird as it may get. Our curiosities do itch most of the time.
