I have a ~6-7" EBJD who I believe is a male, so I'll refer to it as such. Starting about a month ago he seems to be having trouble catching his food. He gets really excited around feeding time when he sees me preparing his food next to the tank (soaking a Hikari Massivore Delight in vitamin c and garlic) and can't wait to eat. The only problem is when I drop the pellet in the tank, he lunges at it and completely misses - he's usually short by about an inch or so - and then sits there staring at me while it sinks to the bottom. Then I have to reach into the tank, scoop up the pellet, and basically throw it in his face so he'll be able to catch it properly. I noticed that he sees the refelection of the pellet in the glass and sometimes chases that instead of the real pellet, so I started to drop it in the center of that tank away from the glass and that didnt help. Sometimes he get's lucky, but most of the time I end up with my entire arm soaked. I hate to see him struggling with something that seems like it should be second nature. I see other JDs on youtube annihilating live food and mine can barely catch a pellet. Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

HI,
(please excuse my english and correct me)

i had the same problem with my "oskar" some time ago. He was so exciting and nervous around feeding time that he missed all food and the others got all.

Then i started to feed him from my hand at the surface of the water with all kinds of food (fish, pellet, bacon, everything...).
Time by time he learned to look up and wait.

Now he is still exciting around feeding time but looks up to the surface (sometimes jumps out) of the water.

Furthermore i made the experience that it is sometimes easier for the "big" fishes to catch living food than pellets and co. because they wait for a moving bait.

many wishes,

flo

I tried to feed him from my fingers yesterday and he came very very close but would not take the pellet. I tried to slowly move it closer to him but he backed off, and I noticed that he was looking at the reflection of my hand in the glass and my actual hand at the same time and I think this confused him. Is there any way to deal with the reflection inside the tank? I think this is the reason he is having these dificulties. Does acrylic reflect less? I will keep trying to make him take the pellet from my fingers.
