okay i bought a tank setup used, cleaned it all. then i noticed the bio wheel was missing from the filter housing. so i went and checked LPS and they don't carry it at all only special order. my filter i have is a penguin 200 by marineland, so it has to filter slots. what i thought about doing was putting the filter in the back slot and using bio balls from marine land would work/do the same thing as the bio wheel, if i filled the front half of the filter tank up.

also since i can't edit/don't know how to on here. it will be a 55 gallon tank with oscar and probably 2 iridescent sharks. i'd like to upgrade filters, but for the time being i am making do with what i have.

i suggest to find a new home for the id sharks and upgrade the tank an filter for the oscar

or if you want the ids, do a massive upgrade on tank, better yet indoor pond and upgrade the filter to a sump

i already upgraded my stuff as is they are still very very tiny (4 inchs at most). i had them in a 20g long for about 3 weeks now they are in the 55.

Fine for now then, but next upgrade, save yourself the time and money of upgrading all the time, plan something large. ID Sharks are one of my favorite fish and it will probably be a fish I will never own since they get large. Unless you want to stunt the fish and have it die prematurely which is never something that should happen.
Search around here for ID keepers and oscars keepers and look at their tanks or ponds. I only know one person that has both ids and oscars together and he has them in a indoor pond larger than my living room.

(i know they can get really big, i was unaware when i bought them. damn, LPS!) but back to the question at hand would my contraption work just the same?

if you have already cycled media and enough bioballs you should be fine for a bit. I am a marineland user myself. I use biomax and the biowheel in my tanks as well as sponges. You can always order the bio wheels online. Frankly the more space for bacterial growth, the better in my mind.

Did you add your media from the 20 gallon to the new tank to keep your bacteria?
Did you add any new fish or just the ones from the 20 gallon?

i at first did a water change and let the water from old tank(20) go into the new tank and then i added tap water to the rest put chemicals in and have let it go with out the bio wheel or bio balls for now. since i have on order a bio wheel, but i figured the balls are more readily avaliable they'd be better(if i ever needed to replace them.).

you should never have to replace the bio balls or a biowheel or biomax. The point of them is to have bacteria grow on them. do you still have media from your other filter? or is the marineland 200 your old filter? A marineland 200 is rated for a 50 gallon tank I believe (could be wrong about that), but if you only have an oscar and two id sharks taht are all very small, there would not be a terrible bioload.

Reason I ask about the media is the bacteria is going to grow in your sponges or biomax, etc, since you already had a running tank, there would be some bacteria in there to help you out with your new tank.
Last thing you want to start having is ammonia or nitrite spikes.

old tank had a tetra whisper ex 30 or w.e some **** like that so the bactirea wasn't really captured. also amonia and nitrie has been 0 since i have started the tanks.(i believe i'd have to get my notepad out that i wrote all test results on.
