I just setup a sump not long ago and last night was the first day I am running it as the tanks only filtration (got rid of my canister)

All the media is from the canister which has been in service for 2 years.

I took all the eheim substrate pro balls (bio filtration) and split it into 2 large filter bags. I have another large bag filled with eheim mechanicaledia ceramic tubes.

All of these bags are laying on the bottom of my sump, the sump is baffleless. Alot of flow though.

My concern is that the water isn't passing through the media. What is everyone's thoughts? Will this work as I have it? Suggestions to improve it?

Thanks

I never use baffles, and put bio-media (also lab rock and rings)in bags, (swish the bags around in old water during water changes to remove excess debris and keep the beneficial bacteria robust) and it has always worked well for me.
I use filter bags (socks) under the influent to the sump as mechanical media.
My ammonia is always 0.00, nitrites 0.00, and nitrates 2-5ppm.

but to be fair, I also use lava rock in bio-fractionation towers, lots of pothos, and at least three 30% water changes per week.

you can always get one of those tetra pond filter boxes and attach to the intake of your pump and put the bags of media on top of the box

someone on here did that on a 300 gallon tank a few years back iirc
