I saw a flowerhorn yesterday at the LFS. He was about a foot long in a 10 gallon tank. I was tempted to buy him but his color looked really dull. Will he brighten up in a better home or stay gray?

Is he worth 20 bucks? I have tank ready to go but I was going to start an African cichlid community with it. I still want to start an African cichlid community tank so that will be 7 tanks if I add this guy.
If he really is a FH, I wouldn't because he's a really bad one and doesn't look like he'll improve much. But, he looks like some kind of barred Midas. It's up to you really.
You're right. I didn't know what a barred Midas is. After I looked it up, he looks like a barred Midas.
Looks interesting, but to answer your original question, I don't think it will color up much.
Stay on track with your original plan. Start up your African Community Tank. This fish will most likely not make you happy.
