The sides usually fine with 5mm as I see all the time. Just put a thick piece of styrofoam under the tank and it will help reduce the pressure on the bottom glass.

According to the glass calculator, 8mm is the correct thickness for a 2.5-3.2 safety factor. If you have any bracing it should be fine.
