Hello,

New guy here, and first post. Forgive me if this has been posted, and please point me in the right direction.

I am a long time fish keeper of smaller cichlids, mbuna, peacocks, things like that however im moving to more larger cichlids. I have tanks ranging from 20 gallon all the way up to 180. I recently picked up some fish from COTA that include 2 1 inch Dovii, and nandopsis haitiensis. My question is there any harm in starting them out in a 20 long? Separately of course. If so, how long is a decent time before moving them to there larger homes? I also have 2 Dovii about 3 inches long in other tanks that I hope to introduce to the red morphs I just got. Hope to get a pair and rehome the 2 extra.

I know i'll need a larger tank for the pair, however that will be awhile before that happens. Just trying to get some information regarding grow out tank sizes and maybe help others in the same boat as myself.

Thanks,
Jay

I think starting them out in their own 20 longs would be OK. The dovii, if you try to do them in a single 20 long, might end up being a single dovii before you know it. I would move the fish out at 2.5" or so.

Thanks for the info. The 2 Dovii I purchased awhile ago didn’t last in the 20 long, I moved them within a week. Those are regular strand Dovii, the 2 I just got are red strand and seem some what less aggressive, (thus far) I’ll monitor them closely. The 2 Nastys are actually doing well in there 20 long, I check them 3 or 4 times a day. I have to admit, the higher temps for them scares me, the water feels so warm. I have a reliable heater and it is maintaining a 85 degree temp.

Thanks for the input guys, I’ll update this thread as time goes on.
