My question is if hang on the back filters are sufficient in biological filtration if they do not have a biowheel? Doesn't the beneficial bacteria need a lot of oxygen?, so what about the hob filters without bio wheels do they still have a good amount of beneficial bacteria or is the oxygen from the water not enough?
in fact, most aquarists tend to prefer a HOB filter like an Aquaclear because of the far superior media capacity over something like an emperor, which only has a relatively thin cartridge...
They are sufficient with out a bio wheel. But IMO the can only be better with one. The idea just makes sense to me. If you can give any bio media a wet and dry effect it will grow better bacteria. That is why wet sumps are a thing of the past and now a wet/dry sump is proven to be better. Plus with say a emperor 400. You have 2 bio wheels that get a wet/dry effect and 2 cartridges that you can stuff full of another bio media. The emperor's can hold alot more bio media than a ac110. And with a ac filter the more mechanical filtration you make it have the less room you have for bio.And emperor's are alot easier to maintain at the same time. Just incase you have not owned a ac HOB filter to clean the measly sponge you have to remove the bio-media and let all the dirt fall in the filter to get the sponge otu to clean it. IMO it is a out dated joke compared to the better brands out there. Once you have used both major brands it is a clear differnce in which is better.
