Ok, heres the deal

I have 3 Tetra 30-60 HOB filters.. (all on different tanks)

Could I put a sponge over the intake and stuff bio media where the filter cartridges are supposed to go???

so here is what happens... water passes through the sponge and into the bio media, then through the floss and back into the tank... (just to let you guys see what I was talking about)

but would this work and still be effective filtration?

I just did some experiments on my Tetra 30-60s yesterday & it wasnt nearly as easy as I was hoping. The impeller well is just too shallow to keep it from overflowing back into the tank. Basically I came up with one big bio HOB & one big mechanical HOB. They both have sponge pre-filters over the intakes, but one is holding a foam block from an AC30 & a 3x8" sheet of Fluval foam with Fluval polishing cloth hanging from the output chute. It flows much better & it cleared up the fine particles in no time. The "bio" HOB was tougher to get right... basically just trial & error until I got the right amount of BioMax in there. Too much & it overflowed, too little & the water just flowed over, instead of thru the media. I think I will add another sheet of Fluval foam under the BioMax next time I clean it out. These filters are so finicky!

i have one of these pumps only temporarily til i can get another better filter. i find that the pump is not very powerful and that it takes very little for the intake to overflow. go for an emperor 400 or better yet, ac110.

yeah, the ac 110 is going to be my next filter upgrade

yep, i think i paid 15 for 6?? but I have 3 tetras so I use 1 package per change
