What is the growth rate of a Jag? I have noticed some tension between the oscars and the jag. At this point I plan on getting the jag a tank of his own. unless they decide who is the dominate one of the tank, ultimatley it will be the Jag. What would be the smallest tank that I could get for the Jag? Im running out of room in my house and almost need to start getting rid of furniture so I can get more tanks! Hell I dont need a couch or an entertainment center! Im always watching my fish! Thanks

I got my jag 1 month ago at 2.5" and it's already 3.5"

Minimum tank would be 75 gallon. But bigger is better. Your Jag could possibly get over 18" hehehe....

I plan on keeping my Jag alone in my 90 gallon once it grows up and gets too aggressive for my Oscars, but only if it's a male. (really starting to look like one)

I think an Ideal single Jag tank would be a 120 gallon.

JAGS
are
NOT
too
AGRESSIVE
for
OSCARS!!!!

It all depends on the size of tank and personality of the fish. Jags do not have 100% killer attitues. I have a big jag that has never had a problem with any fish I've put in with it (unless the fish was small like a feeder)

has your jag ever been in a tank under 300 gallons? :p LOL

I'd say minimum size tank for a female jag would be a 75. a male would be fine in a 75 for quite some time but eventually would probably need a 120 (4' x 2' x 2') if it gets past 16". jags usually grow around an inch per month up to around 8" and then their growth slows down a little bit. :) growth rate, however, depends mostly on diet and water quality.

yessir, it was in a fairly small tank (in comparison to the 300) with several oscars.
He never caused a problem in that tank, and that is the reason I brought him home:)
I really never have seen a Jag go nuts on a tank mate unless it was a feeder or if they were in breeding mode:) I consider their attitude as being a " slightly agressive oscars with some muscle".

I don't think jags are particularly aggressive, but I do think they are highly territorial. more territorial in fact than most other non-Parachromis cichlids. if they don't have enough territory that's when they become aggressive. in really big tanks though they are often (not always) rather peaceful.

my jag story:

I had several fish in my 125 gallon. the largest and boss of the tank was my midas at 6" followed by a dempsey and green terror both around 4", then a firemouth at 2.5-3" and then the smallest in the tank was the jag at 2". the jag was at the bottom of the heirarchy and even got chased around by the firemouth who got bullied by everything else. in time the firemouth went to another tank and the fish continued to grow, the jag of course faster than the others. by the time the jag got to 8", the JD and GT were around 6" and the midas was around 9". the jag was all of a sudden king of the tank and the JD, GT and midas were confined to one small corner of the tank. if they tried to move the jag attacked them. that's why, imo, in anything smaller than a 180 keeping a jag with other large cichlids is a very big risk. as the tank goes up in size the risk is much smaller. :)

rallysman, sounds like yours could be the exception to the rule. there are always exceptions to every rule and even with the most aggressive species you'll come across a tame specimen. on average though, mature jags don't get along with other large cichlids in anything but very large tanks. :grinyes:
