question about jd breeding

ok ive been reading up on it and i get 2 difrent answers 1 jd's dig pits and 2 they lay them on rock but i wanna know which one is true the first or second answer

I think they would breed just about anywhere. I've seen them lay eggs in flower pots, pits, makeshift caves, on a piece of slate. Just like any other cichlid.

I would think the pits are for the fry after hatching. This is what is true for both my convicts and firemouths.

well i red online that they laid them in the pits so i was just so confused

Jack Dempsey's typically lay their eggs on rocks, wood, even the glass on the tank. Afterwards, they will dig multiple pits and move their babies back and forth between the pits.

Sand, gravel, (any size), it doesnt matter. They'll move the substrate regardless.
