I have a 55 gallon acrylic tank, 12 inches wide. I was wondering how many Lemon Oscars could be housed here to maturity (i understand that it could possibly even be just one). I figured i might as well ask since they are supposedly 'short bodied'. Is that true?

Could i maybe put one or two other cichlids in the tank that make suitable mates or just one oscar and that is it, nothing else. Not even a pleco or anything?

I was also thinking applying a 1/2" layer of sand and a few large rocks. Does that sound like a decent home? Should i use one EHEIM Canister filter meant to work up to 70 gallon tanks for my 55 or something more powerful? Maybe two 55 gallon canister filters?

i would house only one O, due to their bio-load. as far as filtration using a canister you can never have too much, but you can have too little. 10x turnover should be good for a canister filter.

What canister filter can i get for my 55 gallon that has a 10x turnover rate? I also intend on purchasing a reverse under-gravel filter system to help clean off the sand and maybe even help with the cycles. What do you think?

i am new to this hobby,
but all the information i have gatherd was undergravel were a wast.
(but thats what i have been told)

and i have a 4ft tank housing 3 large oscars
2 tigers.
1 albeno.

o and 2 brisle nose catfish

and they are all really happy living with each other but quote
(jizon82) their bio-load is crazy

but i am runny a jebbo 1300L pHr.

but back to your question i had them when they were all about 1-3 mn old.
there was 4 but they picked on him and i had to move it to another tank.

but he lives with 2 smaller fish quite happly. he tells them hes boss but he hasnt tryed to eat them.

(and hes about 20 cm larger)

oscars are my first reall fish and i havnt had any major problems.
feel free to ask me any questions about their behavoirs and ill try get back

Are JEBO filters any good? I haven't heard anything about them. I was personally considering a Marineland or EHEIM canister filter...

Haven't owned an EHEIM but alot of the members here uses them.
I have a Fluval405 and FX5. Love em..
As long as you have a 10x turnover GPH on HOB's or 4x turnover on canister, you should be okay with One O.

A 12" wide tank isnt big enough to house a fish that usually gets to 13" sometimes 15"
You could grow 1 out for a year then youll need a bigger tank.

jebo are good for the money or a quick fix but their flow is not that great and certainly nothing near the 1300 l/h they claim when its filled with media. i run 2 and i wouldnt even consider using 2 on a 55 with one O never mind 3 and 2 BN plecs. this is very overstocked and IMO, and probably many here, is not a good example of stocking.
a 55 will do 1 oscar for a while and is anything but ideal as they get to 12"+ as gomezladdams has said. get a 75 then you have room for something else in their, not another oscar though, but add at least 2 canister filters.
