ok i have a uva/b bulb in my heat lamp but i would rather use the hood and the florescent light on top. sorry im a noob to turtle light bulbs? idk.my question is can i get a bulb that will do everything i need it to for the turtles proper care without using a clamp lamp on their tank. also the hood has the clear part the light sits on like most, i heard the special lights that help them is filtered by the glass or plastic and eliminates the purpose of the lighting. is this true? its all so confusing. sorry i dont understand this but thats why i turned to you guys. help?

Nah, the flourecent hood fixtures for UVB bulbs but aren't going to give off sufficient heat for a basking spot. To do a single bulb it would have to be clam lamp style fixtures. And you are correct that the plastic will eliminate the purpose.

Look how I set mine up today for my new baby turtle. I have a basking lamp and I have a UVB/A tube in my hood.

i saw that earlier but my first problem is the hood is one piece. not two separate like your 55. and the second thing is your hood has the plastic under the light correct? ive heard (krzr3000 confirmed) that plastic or glass will filter the uva uvb rays making the light, just a light.

It had a small sheet of glass between it and I removed it so there is nothing between the light. Is you hood literally one piece or like mine in the picture. If its like mine then you can take the top piece off and put it on a metal lid along with the basking lamp.

oh i see. no my hood is the same style as yours but its all one big piece across. how yours seperates in the middle cuz you have two 29 gal hoods on a 55. this is a 45 tall tank and it just has the one lid. but your set up looks very nice. i only have whats here to work with and i cant spend any more money on these guys right now. hopefully that will change or i may have to find them another home.. this was only supposed to be a temp tank for them until i made other arrangements. its plenty big as these turtles are very young. but i know they will need a larger home when they get older.

One of the herp stuff companies makes a combo hood with a flourescent fixture and a screw one for a basking bulb. They're expensive as I recall but if you want to skip the clamp/dome fixture thats an option. Or you could probably diy something similar, like a canopy wired for a strip and a screw bulb.
