Why do we buy this? I have read that some of it has very few living organisms, houses destructive crustacean and other larva and is expensive. I read that most of this has the majority of algae and other larger organisms removed so that the smaller encrusting organisms can survive shipping. Can you just put lava rock or a calcareous rock in your tank and it will eventually also get colonized. Again I am learning. Live rock seems to just be coastal rocks of reef origen in coral reef areas that are set in the sea to be colonized. If you buy just a few pounds of good stuff, like Fiji rock, will these organisms also colonize other bare rocks in your tank?

simply put.. it looks awesome

the benefits far outweigh any risks

for the 1 mantis shrimp you get you get 50 beautiful different algeas, corals, other inverts etc

if it's fully cured you don't have to wait to cycle the tank. and acts as the main component in filtration

I am stickler for NOT suggesting lava rock to be used as live rock, and stick with proper calcerous live rock. You can put dead calcerous rock in the tank, and over time, it will get colonised by the existing live rock in the tank. A lot of people choose to use 60% live rock and 40% base (dead) rock to cut back on cost, and given 6 months or so the live rock life will populate the dead base rock.

Thanks, I posted before I read that lava rock has heavy metals and is not to be used. I will go with the 60/ 40 blend.
