I bought a tank with live rock in it and chenged it over to a cichlid tank. in the process i gave most of the live rock to the aquarium reef store. well there were a few pieces that got left behind and I threw them in my yard. So my question is... a friend of mine just setup a salt water tank and is going thru the cycling.... he bought 2 pieces of live rock already.. question is.....i know this live rock is dead obviously... would anything ever grow on it again or would it become live again?

It's likely totally dead if it's been outside for a while. It'll become live again as stuff spreads from the other live rock.

Thank You. Yes. I wanted a cichlid tank so I bought a 72 bow front and converted it into cichlids. Gave all the salt stuff to the reef center. so a piece or two of this rock i found i threw in my yard and has beeen there for over a year. so it would be ok to give to him them and put in his tank.

Just wash it. I love using old live rock for cichlid tanks, you just gotta wash in hot water first to make sure there isn't any decaying organic junk.
