I've had my archer for a while now, and I love him... He is a great fish... I was trying to get a second as I read they are more friendly in a group setting, however my fish store has only carried a banded archer once and that's who we have in our tank now. I didn't want to mix him with a common archer...

So my question is... Do they change colors to blend in with their surroundings? Every site I've come across doesn't mention anything about it, but I swear his stripes come and go on a regular basis...

I was just going by this info I pulled of the web...

Comparison to other archerfish

The banded archerfish and its relative the largescale archerfish (Toxotes chatareus) are sometimes grouped and sold together under the label "archerfish".[11] However, the banded archerfish has four dorsal spines whereas largescale archerfish has five. The banded archerfish usually has four to five wedge-shaped bands, but largescale archerfish has six or seven spots and shorter bands in a regular, alternating pattern.[11] Unlike the silvery banded archerfish, the largescale is sooty in colour. The banded archerfish may also be confused with the smallscale archerfish, Toxotes microlepis. These are more difficult to distinguish, but the most striking difference is in the last two bands. While both species have four or five wedge-shaped bands, those of the banded archerfish extend to the dorsal fin, whereas those of the smallscale archerfish do not; there are two spots on the dorsal fin separate from the main bar.["

But was mainly wondering if his disappearing stripes were normal...
