I currently have a green severum and a gold severum in a 37 gallon tank with a parrot cichlid, but I recently bought a 40 gallon on craigslist and I was thinking about moving the severums to that tank. I was wondering if a 40 gallon would be enough room for the two severums and another "main." I was thinking about getting a green terror, but I read that those fish can be pretty aggressive. Would it be a bad idea to put a green terror in with the two severums? If so, what fish could I put in with them, other than a parrot cichlid? I haven't had any problems between the severums and the parrot, but I just wanted to set up something new.

A 40 gallon is too small to be a long-term home for two severums, so two severums plus another cichlid is a really bad idea IMO.

Okay! Thanks...I'm pretty new with everything and I was thinking they would be okay, but after reading around a bit I learned that I probably shouldn't even have 2 severums in anything smaller than a 75 gallon. Right now the two I have are both very small...so they are okay for now at least. I will look into getting a bigger tank before they grow up...and I probably won't be getting any other cichlids for the 40 gallon.

Do you think any gouramis might be okay though? Dwarf gouramis at least?

Keep in mind I am very new to this! Any and all advice is welcome and very much appreciated!

:)

Yeah gouramis are a great start if your only looking at 40gal right now. Unfortuatly MOST cichlids get huge 10+ and wouldnt have barely any swimming room in that tank, and you would have a constant battle with water quality.
Gouramis are a good choice and there is also many species of dwarf cichlids that are extremely attractive and you could make a nice community in a 40 gal. Some Bolivian rams, or apistogramma species fit perfectly in a 40gal. You can get maybe 4 of them, a small pleco, and school of some gnarly tetra or something of the likes and your will have yourself a great set-up.
Severums need at least 75 gal. They get BIGGG.

Your tank is definitely too small for 2 severums full grown or near it. I have 2 8-9 inch green severums in a 75 gallon and that feels like just right. I have 4 silver dollars with them and 3 catfish. I got bashed for having so much in this tank that is pretty large to me! I would not recommend getting anything else for that size of tank.

Alright, thank you! I think I'll just get some gourami then...and a nice little pleco. I've wanted some gourami for awhile anyway. And I will be sure to find a bigger tank for them too! I just found that 40 gallon on craigslist for the stand and ALMOST everything I needed for $30, so maybe I will find a nice deal on the 75 gallon. They should be okay for awhile though...one is probably about the size of a dime...maybe a nickel. The other one is a little bigger than that guy though.

ok yeah if they are that small then they should be fine for awhile until you can find a larger tank just be sure to keep up with the water quality but yeah they should be fine for a couple months, and with the pleco make sure its a small growing one and not a common or sailfin as those guys get huge
