Question about Nimbochromi Fusctaeniatus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd assume it is similar to the other nimbo's in what they can eat, so I would say they should be ok for now, but watch out later as it grows to pick off smaller ones

I had a Fusco. Great fish!!! They are aggressive, but not on the level of Buttikoferi or some SA nd CA's. It would be best to slightly overstock your tank and make sure you don't have any fish that easily fit into its mouth. If he's 6-8" 4-6" Mbuna will work fine.

The Nimbochromis Fuscotaeniatus, is a very beautiful fish but also very aggressive. You will either hate or love them once they get mature.

In my opinion you wil get problems with your 125 gal, aquariums housing these fish should be large enough that the fish that are picked on can distantiate themselves from fusco's. The normal size of a fusco is about 10"? Or about 25cm but they can get a little larger. I advise people that buy fusco's from me to keep them in a an aqaurium of at least 250cm or ~8'+ long.

Here is my male he is about 6 years old.

Nimbo's are fine to keep with other cichlids. Anything less then 3" will be a meal for them. I breed them and have had them for just about as long as I have been in the hobby. They are pretty low-keyed if they are not the dominant male in the tank. My suggestion is to get another "bigger" fish to keep him in check i.e. Buccochromis Rhodesii, Fossochromis Rostratus, Champs, Paratilapia Bleekeri, Nimbochromis Polystigma, etc.
Here is a pic of my breeder

These guys should probably be classified as Tyrannocrhomis. Ad Konings even says this, and from someone witha Tyranno and a Fusco.. there is no denying that behavior, body type, color and personality is closer than with the nimbochromis species.

Nice fish though... I like them!

This fish is a Prince among haps. Gorgeous electric blue males. A 2" fish should do alright initially--they're quite agile. You don't mention what fish you have. That plays a part--larger Mbuna might pose a threat as they might recognize him as a juvinile deliquent [ie--someone's whose gonna grow up and eat their young.] Haps are less agressive/territorial and even 3-4" tank mates should be fine.
