I picked up a couple loiselle from my lfs a couple weeks ago and one mystery parachromine that I’ve determined to be a motaguensis. Upon acclimating I noticed a lot of blue and red in the fins and assumed it to be a male (a pointed dorsal fin also), I’ve noticed over the past few days he/she has had sort of a swollen stomach like it’d eaten a lot. I know it hasn’t and here in the last 24-48 hours it’s sexual reproductive organ seems to be increasing in size. So now I’m thinking it’s a female preparing to lay eggs. The fish is maybe 4” from lip to tail. Any info on sexing it would be appreciated and typically how long between the organ being visible and growing in size does it take to lay eggs?

One of the best ways to determine gender on motaguense is by the spots on the lower facial area.
Here is a female.

now a male

the small spots are male, female not

again, (a little younger) female above, male below

I tried to edit your pics to get a closer look at the spots, but when cropped, they are not clear enough to be definitive.
The first shot I think I see all spots (male trait) but not in focus enough to be sure.

this 3rd photo appears to be female to me, but still the spots (or lack thereof) on the lower face are what need to be sharply defined on the shot, and are not really in focus enough.

Thanks. It’s difficult getting a good picture, it’s kinda wary when I have my phone up to the glass.
