So, I need to patch the holes in the bottom of a used tank made for the center overflow I'm removing. The tank itself is 1/2" acrylic, so I figured patching with 1/2" would be the proper way to go, but of course I have no 1/2" acrylic on hand. I do however have 1/4" on hand. Would two pieces of 1/4 inch be the same as 1 piece of 1/2" once they were bonded? It doesn't have to be pretty, just functional.

It doesnt have to be 1/2"....the holes are small and it won't compromise the integrity of the tank to patch with 1/4".
If you plan to or think you may use the holes in the future, putting 1/2" on top of 1/2" will give you 1" total thickness and you may need to get deeper bulkheads....
I had the exact project a few years ago and the patch I used has never since been and issue. (I used 1/4")
