I made a big mistake with a small seven gallon tank that I just did a water change on, and all the fish died. I feel horrible, but this brings me to my question. If I just put some brand new plastic plants in there, can I transfer them to my 50g that is almost done being set up? I'm sure I can, I just don't want to contaminate the water in it.

well what did the fish die from in the 7 gallon? did they die from you doing the water cange and they got shock or something? if it was a desease in the 7 gallon then you should put the fake plants in viniger water for a few hours or so then put it in your 50 gallon.

I feel stupid even saying this, but after I did the water change I put them right back in. They never had a chance because the water never got a chance to settle.

wait you took your fish out of the tank to do the water change? and why would the water have to settle? just leave the fish in there and make sure the water is atleast 75 degrees when you put it in your tank again so the fish won't get shock.

I've had tanks all my life but never did a water change and obviously I wasn't thinking. Luckily for me it was just some Tiger Barbs and Rosy Barbs, and now I've learned my lesson. But I feel awful.

So then it was shock? So the plants should be fine? I thought it may have had to do with there still being chlorine in the water.

was it a 100% water change?

i would only do 50% tops. and if you dont dechlorinate it will kill the bacteria in your filter putting you back to square one. there are many good threads on water changes. i would suggest some maintenance reading. goodluck

Alright thanks. So my plants should be alright then? I had just opened the package too so they were in there an hour tops.
