Are elephant ears poisonous to fish? I never knew they were poisonous at all until just this month. The guy that used to own this house and put these ponds in also planted elephant ears at the pond's edge and the roots are in the pond. Is that dangerous to the fish? He also used to feed the koi the elephant ear leaves. Are there other plants I should stay away from?

Was not aware that they were as well. Elephant Ears are related to Taro which is a water loving plant used as a troopical annual in northern climates. Completely harmless and several varieties avail.

If the previous owners Koi ate them, how do the fish look now?

The only other poisonous plants I can think of is Holly (Ilex sp.) If the leaves fall in the water, they have been know to harm fish. I have one of three that is still alive behind my pond and I have not had any issues from it. Pine needles can effect water parms. but that would only be if a huge amount fell in the pond and were not taken care of.

A few years back we had a koi club member give a talk on safe/nonsafe plants around a pond. Not only can some of the leaves be dangerous but many flowers as well as seeds can post some problems. Muske brings a great point in " how do the fish look now". I'll look back on my HD and try to post the list here.
