Hey guys,

I want to set up a 90G CL tank. I'm using a fluval 104 and 404 filters along with a Hydro V. I'm not too familiar with powerheads and need a little help.

1. Do I buy powerheads and somehow attach them to my Fluvals, or do they work alone?

2. How strong do I need it, for a 90G?

3. Can someone suggest a brand they trust?

Thanks in advance.

1. Power heads are independent units so you don't need to attach them to anything except the tank and plug them in.

2. The power head design really determines how much current it produces and in which way it, ie. high pressure or low pressure. I would use one a low pressure one from 500-1000gph for your size tank.

3. I would recommend a Koralia Evolutions 1050. It runs off of 5 watts and produces a max flow of 1050gph but is a low pressure pump so it great for creating current. It also attaches by a suction cup and magnetic base so you can attach it to one corner of your tank.

With strongs powerheads in that small a tank aren't you going to get some intense turbulence on the other side, perhaps even pushing back to the originating side? For Loaches isn't the need for current and the complications of turbulence part of the reason for the River-Tank Manifold design, http://goo.gl/eykH9? Powerheads on one side pulling water from the other. Of course that renders open intake designs such as the Koralia inappropriate.

I'm working through these issues myself since I'm looking into making my 220gal a river tank also for Clown Loaches.
