All the juvie RD's I see in stores are this yellowish color and some have these blackish patches, but all the mature RD's I see on this site are red or red and white and I was wondering if all RD's started out yellow and became red later.

depends on diet, lighting, genes, etc

As they grow the colors change. The dirty looks fades away and then your left with a completely different color fish. Petland here in BR has some for 24.99(a wee bit high) that have grown 1"to 2" since they've got them and have lost all of their yellow color and are now orange. No spots or hitler mustaches.

males

depends on gentics and how much protein it recieves in its diet.

rd change colors alot in the juvy stage and those black splotches are fry camofloge wearing off somtimes it evan pops back up on a already colored place and that will change color slightly.i have 9"female devil with a big hump on her head bigger than her male midas mate at 12" so yeah lady devils can grow big koks.:grinno:

Agreed, females will also get humps and large fin trailers.
