I have a proven pair of Jack (Male is a EBJD & Female is a Geno) My Jacks have not spawned for a while. I have lots of Fry from the first two batches but they were spawning once a month at first and now they don't even seem to care for each other. When I first put them back together after the last spawn they fought and weekly the one in charge would change places with the subordinate. However for the last 3-4 weeks the female has decided she is the Boss. I even added a 2nd female in the tank to see if that would mix things up? The Primary BIG Female seem to run the tank and keeps the male and the 2nd Female in the corners. She is less aggressive to the 2nd Female than the male. Its bin about 10 weeks sense I put the pair back together.

I was wondering if Jacks stop spawning threw the winters?

Should I use a divider for a while and let them watch each other threw it? What would encourage the original pair to spawn?

I do weekly 30-40% water changes. Feed a variety of foods. Also bin feeding a little more meaty stuff of late to try & bulk them up.

I am still learning lots so hit me with any info or advice you might have?

Thanks, Arkangel77

I don't think a seasonal change has anything to do with this. If your water temp and day/night cycle of your lighting hasn't hasn't changed then I can't see them preceving a differance. It could be a change in your local water for the winter, maybe but not all that likly. Is the tank the same temp as always? I sometimes do a large 90% water change and that somtimes gets my fish in the mood. You could try the devider too or if possible remove the dominant female for a week or so and reintroduce her the new female might breed with the male or when she is put back the presents of the new female my get her interested in the male. How old are these fish? Cichlids go through a period in thier lives wher they spawn quite often and as they age they spawn less and less until they stop breeding alltogether.

Thanks for the reply Tom. The fish or 3-4 years old. I am not 100% sure. I am going of what the previous owner told me. I may do a large water change and replace with cooler water, If that don't work I am thinking of pulling out the dominate female. They just don't seem interested in each other???

hey bro,
yeah maybe just need a break but some times that happens. I had long pauses as well. Any pictures of the pair and the blue gene I sold you?

As Cichlids get older, the frequency in which they spawn decreases.

Also by the way you describe it, the female dominates the tank, that probably means the male is simply not good enough for her to want to breed with him. Females always choose dominant males that are strong and healthy because they stand a better chance of raising healthy fry... that's the reason you see all the lip locking and displaying before they breed, they are testing each others' strength.

I will get some pics posted tomorrow.

Thanks for the Input yall, I think I screwed them up when I separated them into different tanks. I got some ideas of how to fix this.

Thanks for all the input - it is very appreciated!
