I know you typically look for the black blotch on the dorsal fin to ID the female. At what size does that blotch become present? is it always there or only when it becomes sexually mature? Also is there a body height difference from males and females? I have 2 from the same parents I think both are about 3-4 inches niether has a distinguisable blotch except when the light is just right on one of them but not sure it can be called a blotch it just looks alittle darker but not always present. Also one is high bodied and the other alittle more slender.

Nothing is ever precise when dealing with fish. The only way you can be sure of the sex is if you vent them. I have a breeding pair and neither have a black blotch on their dorsal fin.
