What do you guys think, will a stunted fish in the lfs still able to grow normally when given a proper room to live in a home tank? can they still reach its decent size/max size?

Really depends on how "stunted" it is. For example, my argentea are from a large group from a LFS. They were about 2" when I got them. Now that I've had them a while, they've easily doubled in size, but the same leftover group still at the LFS is 2" still.
Does that mean they're stunted at the LFS? Not likely. Could they become stunted? Maybe.
All depends on how much time and the conditions the fish has been kept in, what kind of fish, etc.

This also tends to be somewhat species specific in my experience, some fish when provided with overall better conditions grow rapidly others don't tend to grow much at all. As well the degree to which it is stunted will also play a role.

:iagree:

What about coloration? Do stunted fish ever show their real coloration? (Sorry I have basically the same question over in the SA/CA Cichlid sub forums)

as has already been said it kinda depends, unfortunately I have an opaline gourami from when i first started keeping fish and i stunted the heck out of him, he's grown maybe an inch tops in almost a year :\

thanks all for the answers, the truth is, that its still hard to know whether or not the fish sold in the lfs is stunted unless we know the supplier well,
cheers
