So one day I'd like to either have some ID or paroon sharks and I know they require huge tanks to live. I dont have(and likely never will) thousands of dollars to spend on an aquarium so I probably wont ever get any. But are there not cheap big aquariums somewhere? Everywhere I look the 200 gallons+ cost like 3k dollars. So if I ever got a 1000 gallon one would it cost like 20,000$ or could I get cheaper/less decorated ones?

Your best bet is to look on craigslist, my brother sold afew things on there an he got calls within 30mins of posting... so stuff goes pretty fast FYI.

You could do a pond, or like Meko you could do and intex pool, fyi you might want to check out hes thread its perfect for you.

you could do a plywood tank with a viewing window, there is currently a 4,300 gal. tank that is just about finished. I believe once you get up over 1,000 or something you should be able to build it for under $1 a gallon.

If that is something that interests you check out the DIY section

should be able to get like a 215 for 700 800 dollars brand new from a store
its the stand lghts etc that makes them up to 3k

I would suggest some DIY, there are some great build threads here.
I recently bought a 125 gallon with stand, hood, filter, for $150 on craigslist. You can find deals, you just have to be persistent and keep looking.

when buying brand new from the LFS, you can pretty much budget $100 for every 10 gallons of water (for normal freshwater) give or take.

so yes, it can be expensive.

if buying used, be careful.

when going monster you don't want to skimp on quality. the bigger the tank, the more important it is that it is made right and made well.

if on a budget, what I would do is buy the actual tank brand new, and then all the accessories used, and you can build a stand yourself. thats probably the best bet for a big setup on a budget.

the problem with buying a complete setup used is that you often get a lot of equipment you might not like, and end up replacing it with stuff you like anyway..which sort of negates the cost saving in buying new.
