Question about testing rocks to see if their safe?

I forgot, in order to test rocks from outside to see if their safe to go into an aquarium, you boil them for a while then let them dry then put vinegar on them to see if they bubble? Bubbling is bad and no good and no bubbling is okay? Then boil again and their good to go? It's been like 6 years since I've done this.

I personally pressure wash them then rinse them in really hot water, boiling can cause them to blow up. And bubbling means they'll dramatically change your PH.
