I have decided that I am going big with a tank due to advice from you guys and gals on here. 72in by 30in by 30in with 2c.m glass. This is 280 gallon.
I haven bought it yet, or ordered it to be made. I am also going to go for a sump filter (as in a glass tank with four compartments for filtering and a pump.), as they seem to be the preferred method in Thailand and to me seem simple and effective.
Similar to this one of Novo’s.

My question is about cycling water. Obviously I know fresh water needs to be treated before it put in the tank. Let’s say for example you siphoned 60% of your water out, how do you introduce fresh water and from where?
I’m now thinking if I buy the above mentioned tank, with the sump system above. I’ll need a big, closable plastic tank outside my house, which I can fill with water the day before I want to cycle and treat accordingly. Then attach a hose to the tank outside to an external pump and put the fresh treated water back in.
This is what I do for other tanks I have, but they’re 20gallon so transfer of water is done with buckets
How do you folks do it with 180 gallon tanks up and how are you treating water before you put it in?

hey u wann double check its 2cm thats 20mm glass enough to build 8x4x3 tanks.

errm yes because that's 6ft by 2.1/2ft by 2.1/2ft.

you may want to look at an acrylic tank of that size glass not only heavy but it can always crack with monsters in it, also tenacor makes an excellant tank and ship world wide where are you, and when initially adding your water let it run thru your filtration system in the tank for a week or so before adding fish that will remove all the chlorine, into the air thats all you need to do then adjust your ph accordingly I've been hanging around these guys (fish) for about 30 years or so. taks a look at some of my tanks .
Thx

^ thanks for the response, but I don’t mean initially, I mean once you’re up and running with fish in the tank. Others have said they siphon water out periodically and add fresh water. as you saying you don’t change water at all?

just siphon old water out of tank to outside, or bathtub, or toilet. then just put water back into the tank straight from a faucet, keep the water temperature roughly the same temp, and add water conditioner while your filling.

now that's got me, I never use water from the tap and the taps in my house are fed from a water tank outside, so in a way it's simi aged anyway.
i always use aged water with all my fish tanks, but that's what's got me thinking because the biggest i have now is only 20 gal so it's easy to use aged water.
tell me more or point me in the right direction for a tutorial if there is one, do you fill it striaght back into the tank or the fillter first? What conditioner do you use and how do you know if you putting the right amount in as you do it?

bump, Can anyone be a bit more speciffic regarding water changes? 50% every week, 60% every fortnight I've read in several posts......etc etc. How are you doing it exactly?
I have gained some very important info from you guys already, and TBH i was stopped from rushing in due to this forum, i am going to buy a set up, the wheels are in motion,
But this question isn't getting much responce, Up to now all it's got is "straight form the tap, treat as you add new water. "

i think this would do better in the general aquaria discussion. 50-60% is a bit much for regular maintenance.

it depends on your setup, bio-load, cycle stage.
i do a 30% water change once every 2 weeks (or 1 week if i have extra time) for my bare tanks
and a 30% change once a week for my tanks with substrate
i don't use aged water and i directly use a tube from the faucet to the tank. test the water first to make sure it's safe.
add a bit of aquarium salt as water is added.
