Hello everyone. This is my first post/thread on this great site though i must say i've been creeping around the forums for a couple months now. A few days ago i got a very small Jack Dempsey ( It is a little over an inch long) I am not sure wether i can still consider the fish to be a fry, but in any case i have him a 20 gallon for the time being. I am feeding the him/her crushed Omega One Chiclid Pellets as well small freeze dried shrimp and crushed flakes a couple times daily. I am just wondering at what rate I can expect my new fish to grow and when the black stripes will go away on it? There is also a male dwarf gourami in the 20 gallon with the Dempsey and i am curious to know if this will work out until the Dempsey gets in its new 55 gallon home this time next month.... the gourami is about 3 inches long but the two fish rarely, if ever acknowledge each-other. Any responses or comments would be greatly appreciated, id like to learn as much as i can about my new fish.

Thanks

Do not keep them together for too long, but if for only a month until 55gallon it will be fine. The fish should be settled in and coloring up around the 3" mark. Don't worry about the growth rate, just keep up on your water changes and everything will be all good.

I have two females which I got roughly one or two months ago now. When I got them there were probably the same size as yours and in this time they have gotten considerably bigger! I have two females at the moment that are slowly changing their colours depending on their moods it seems.

Mine are now I'd say rougly between 2- 2.5 inches.

Hope that helps :) those two are my prized fish and I am also going to be upgrading the tank very very soon. I have them with a blue gourami and so far they are fine. The only fish to get attacked (and eaten) were a few little ones here and there and another cichlid which was sorta stony looking.

I just think that the JD's have so much character which is why I love mine so much - even if they have cost me a small fortune!

I actually find it fun the way they have basically arrived, killed off who they didn't want in their tank and thats that! They are apparently two females but that doesn't seem to change who the bosses are :)

Really looking forward to getting the male, my new tank and maybe babies!

If you can post some of your pics...curious ;)

my JDs grew quickly to 4" and then slowed down after that. they have been in a 100 for 4 months. they started in a 55. i got one at 2 inches in may and he is about 4.5 to 5 now

I have a nice pair of breeding jacks.....female is about five inches and the male is about seven....they breed every few weeks and I am constantly finding new homes for the fry that make it.......
