Hello IAH,

I saw this Jag for sale at store. From the sight of it, it seems to be a "customer return" as it's a solo piece (in a Wholesale store) and it's eye is cloudy.

AFAIK, Jags can be sexed based on coloration and the tips of the dorsal fins (which are rounded in females and pointed in males).

Based on this, I think the one in the picture below is a male.

1. Can someone confirm if this is a male?

2. Will the "cloudy eye" be cured with proper water conditions and medications?)

3. (As it is almost definitely a "customer return" and a very recent one), what would be a recommended price for this fish? (I bought a female of about the same size for about 7 USD)

Thanks,

i doubt you could fix the eye and im not good at sexing jags but i depending on the size at most i would only pay like $10-$15 bucks

I have a couple of pairs of Auratus Cichlids (i.e. 4 fish around 3 inches each) which I want to get rid off. I wonder if the Store will let me exchange them for this Jag.

I'd have guessed female, but it's just a guess . . . it could be blind in that eye . . . are both eyes cloudy? even if blind in one eye, could still be a healthy fish . . .

but yeah, it's a safe bet he/she wasn't kept in the best conditions . . .

Both eyes were "cloudy".. I don't know if that automatically means he is blind.

If this is due to poor water conditions (i.e. Ammonia burn) can it be cured with proper care (and better living conditions)?

There will be no point getting this fish if this "cloudy" eye condition (which this guy has on both eyes) is incurable.

Please advise.

Thanks

Well the point would be to give it a proper home. But if your not into the rescuing scene, then you could look elsewhere. Looks like a nice fish otherwise. No idea in sexing.

If you get a good deal, take it and see if it will cure. If they want full price, I would wait for a healthy jag.

Probably just a bacterial infection in the eye. Antibiotics should clear it up. Ive seen many fish in poor water conditions get silver eyes and they can regain vision relativly fast.
Im sure your lfs should give you some store credit if you give them fish. Plus this jag should be reduced price. I would buy him, and put it in a 10-20gal tank and treat with clout meds and see how his eyes heal befor going into a main tank.
BTW, its not ammonia burn.
