Freshwater. Brackish is not a good term for the salts these fish prefer to have in their water. Brackish water incorporates sodium chloride salts. Rift lake cichlids, such as fronts and other Tanganyikans, evolved in waters containing calcium chloride salts.

but yea fresh water. all fish can benefit from some amount of salt but not near enough to make it brackish

this is a common mistake. As they said above wrong kind of salt, but often stores will tell people that they are brackish. Many confuse the difference, but so you know brackish water can kill a front. Seen many people kill multiple fronts with this misadvice.
