I'm making an outdoor sump filter for my 155 gallon tank. As such I probably have too many options. The tank is about 24 inches deep. Depending on how tall I cut the tubes that allow the water to flow into the sump, the standing height in the overflow tubes in the tank changes. I don't know what ideal is, and I havent found it. If I cut the pipes to the same height as the pipes in the tank, the water would not flow at all. If I cut them a couple inches shorter, the water will flow when the water in the over flows in the tank gets higher than a couple inches. If I cut the pipes very short, the water will probably flow very very fast as it is being pushed by the 24 ihch water collumn (I'm exaggerating to make my point.), which might be fine. but I would be concerned the water dropping that far in the pipes in the tank would cause so much bubbling deep in the tubes that the bubbles would start to fill up in the tubes and break the siphon eventually. Maybe quickly, maybe not, I don't know.
I overbuilt the overflow for safety. 2 pipes each 1 1/4 inches. system will be powered by a jebao 12,000 with a 1 ihch line. It gives me a lot of flexibility. Everything is done except for this last part.
