Can oscars be sexed by their behavior? i.e. bed making? My oscar seems to be clearing out what looks exactly like a bass or bluegill bed in the sand in his/her tank. Is this something that can help to determine the sex of the fish? If not what is the proper technique to vent them and any pictures of said vents would be appreciated.

it is not always 100 % right........but the male oscars anal fin tends to be larger than the females. You would need to be looking at a specimen over 8" long though for maturity.

First I've heard of anal fin size, but it makes enough sense.

I have been told that, in mature specimens, the male's vent area will look like oo and the female's will look like oO . Many people love to assert that it's impossible to tell without actually venting the fish or watching them breed. Even if there are good physical clues, they will be drowned out by the cries of 'experts'.

This unfortunately is true, although I have noticed that in my cases......the males will do the digging and nest building. again, not a surefire way to tell though.

They difference in behaviour cannot make you recognize a male from a female.
The fin sizes and shape are exactly the same. No way of telling, until they spawn.
Not even then it's sure if you have a couple fr 2 females will go through the same thing when together.

That's right. It must be absolutely impossible for anyone, anywhere to ever know whether an Oscar is male or female without these exact things happening. The very notion of sexual dimorphism in cichlids is unprecedented and absurd. Just look at festae.

Not always, but yes....most of the time it is purely a guess without putting a group in a tank and seeing which ones pair off.

Any positives on venting these guys? and how exactly is it done. when I get mine to eat off the top of the water i look at the vent area but it seems like it only has one O

so does mine the second one is just really small and hard to see

when i had two oscars the other one had two though perfectly visible

so im pretty sure mine is a male

that would make sense as i have heard usually the male builds the nest and mine acts like he is nest building and seems to be a male according to his vents... oh yeah he/she is around 10-12"
