first of all, after looking on the net i have not found much information about keeping rays in hard, alkaline water and was wondering if anybody on here does and if it is possible? at my lfs, they have reticulata in a discus tank that is around ph6 but my tap water is about 7.8 and was wondering, first of all if a reticulata can survive 7.8 and secondly, if possible, will it still be possible to acclimatise the ray even after it has only just acclimatised to the very low ph. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I keep my rays at a ph 7 with no problem at all. In the mega tank the ph is 7.8 and tey are breeding all the time. If this has any effect on the rays in the long time is a question. It's hard in very big tanks to get the ph down but we will in the future by drilling our own well.

Frank

:iagree:

I keep my motoro pair in tap water with ph 7.6. They've been in there for 2,5 years now and it doesn't seem to bother them. She gave birth last weekend for the second time. Also the pups are doing fine.

They've said it all, they should be fine.

cheers for the help everyone, greatly appreciated. How long should i acclimatise for, are we talking hours, days or months here?

If you are asking about acclimatise rays to new tank, generally, I feel an hour is sufficient but of course no harm to be on the safe side. Take it slowly if you have the time.

i would get you tank water ph as close to the ph in the water the rays are coming from then let the ph build back up slowly over time

if you are bring rays from a ph of say 6.5 to a tank with a ph of 8.5 it will take to long to = the ph of the tank and poly box

slowly is the key a change of ph from 6.5 to 8.5 should be done over 1-2 weeks
