Tuesday i picked up a 3" Datnoid from a LFS and he seems to be stressed. He's in a growout 55gal with 2 tiger oscars that are the same size as him. There is some rocks and a tube for cover and he's always in the tube. So yesterday i took out the tube and all he does is lay on his side. When i stick my hand in the water and pick him up he flares up in my hand and will swim around a bit and then just lay back down. I've had oscars in the past show this behavior when stressed but no other fish that i've owned has reacted this way. Is this normal for a juvenile Datnoid????????

honestly..all the datnoids i picked up was fine as soon as i threw them in...i think they adjust quickly..they all ate the same i day i picked them up

Some can be very very shy at first.

Particulary at juvie stage.

Just be patient and give it some time. Make sure it doesn't get picked on either.

Is your dat still shy when you feed them? If he is running around and active during feeding he is probably still getting used to the tank. I kept my juv Indo with a tiger oscar twice his size and he was shy at first. after a while he was pinning my oscar to the glass. Just monitor your dat and keep us posted. By the way, what kind of dat is it? Two species need brackish water.

is your tank bare bottom.. just wondering.. since my 60 gal tank is. and it's only when they are full that they tend to lay down a little bit. but not everytime. they also like to hide behind the sponge filters. i think when they are juveniles they are shy. i have seen adult size and they don't hide anymore.. maybe their too big to hide.:)

:iagree:

I have had my Dat for a month or so, but the litter bugger still hides... Only comes out when its feeding time, then he darts out of his favorit spot behind some driftwood, snatch the food and darts back to his cover... What should I do?

try leaving the lights off. when i turn on the lights, my dat hides but then comes out after a few minutes.i guess mine isnt that shy though. its always out when the lights are off. still wont eat pellets though.
